Climate change: What’s up with the summer?

8 Aug 2025

In our video interview, LMU meteorologist Thomas Birner explains how the rainy July in Germany is connected to our warming climate.

Is the summer finally returning? Why has it rained so much over the past few weeks? Professor Thomas Birner from the Meteorological Institute at LMU explains that as the planet warms, so too the risk of extreme weather situations increases: “In fact, we're expecting more rain in places, simply because a warmer atmosphere can absorb more water vapor,” says Birner. “And we notice this above all with strong precipitation events.”
